There is a shadow looming over the world of Hispanic nonprofits, threatening many with insolvency. Hundreds of charitable organizations confront the disturbing fact that a mere 1.2 percent of the donations from national foundations go to Hispanic nonprofits. One organization, however, that has bucked this trend is the highly successful San Francisco-based Hispanics in Philanthropy, or HIP. Aggressive, savvy, and international in scope, HIP is filling a small but critically important niche.

Report Ranks Aetna, Cigna Most Efficient, Accurate Among Health Insurers in Reimbursements to Physicians

Aetna ranked first among 130 large health insurers in efficiency and accuracy in reimbursements to physicians, and Cigna ranked second, according to a report scheduled for release on Thursday by Athenahealth, the Wall Street Journal reports.

2.2 Million Hispanic-Owned Firms Estimated to Generate Almost $400B

Research indicates that among American minority groups, Hispanics are the most likely to start their own businesses. The most recent government data show Hispanics own the largest number of firms.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund: 'Speaking the Language of Business'

By awarding a whopping 82,000 college scholarships worth more than $221 million, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund may be breaking all records for nonprofit success. Founded in 1975 to boost college education among U.S. Hispanics, the fund has changed the lives of tens of thousands of Hispanic students from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As the nation's preeminent organization supporting Hispanic higher education, and one of Hispanic Business magazine's Top 25 nonprofits, the fund reportedly is a model of efficiency and results.

More Than Half of U.S. Hospitals Insolvent, Near Insolvency, Study Finds

More than half of U.S. hospitals are "teetering on the brink of insolvency" or have become insolvent because they do not treat an adequate number of patients to provide sufficient revenue, according to a study recently released by Alvarez & Marsal, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Number of Uninsured U.S. Residents Projected To Rise by 1.1M for Each Percentage Point Increase in Unemployment Rate, Could Strain Public Programs, Analysis Shows

For every one point rise in the U.S. unemployment rate, the number of uninsured is projected to increase by 1.1 million people, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured analysis released Tuesday, the New York Times reports (Sack, New York Times, 4/29). The report, conducted by researchers at the Urban Institute's Health Policy Center, also examined the effect that a one-percentage-point rise in the national unemployment rate would have on state Medicaid and SCHIP programs (Francis, "Health Blog," Wall Street Journal, 4/28)

Cost of Insurance Far Outpaces Income Study Released During "Cover The Uninsured Week" Shows Cost Of Covering Families Takes Bigger Piece Of Household Budget

Americans who get health insurance for their families through their jobs have seen their premiums increase 10 times faster than their income in recent years, according to a new analysis of government data. The study, released today by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, shows that a growing share of workers’ earnings is being absorbed by the increasing cost of health insurance. Nationwide, the amount employees pay for family coverage increased 30 percent from 2001 to 2005, while family policyholders’ income increased just 3 percent over the same period.

Report Examines State Health Care Reforms That Target Minorities, Immigrants, Non-English Speaking Residents

(Apr. 25, 2008)      "Identifying and Evaluating Equity Provisions in State Health Care Reform," Commonwealth Fund: The report by Brian Smedley and researchers from the Opportunity Agenda and Families USA identifies state policies that promote equitable health care access and quality -- particularly among racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants and people who lack a proficiency in English -- by expanding health coverage and access to care, improving quality, empowering patients, upgrading health system infrastructure and addressing social and community-level determinants of health. The report also provides an evaluation of current laws, regulations and proposals in five states -- California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington state -- and identifies additional steps states can take to increase equity in health care (Commonwealth Fund release, 4/24).

Opportunities for Hispanics under Review

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Social Security Administration are launching a study group to better understand the problems that Hispanics face in getting hired and promoted in the government.

Naomi C. Earp, chairman of the EEOC, and Michael J. Astrue, the Social Security commissioner, announced the formation of the working group yesterday. It will be led by Veronica Villalobos, an adviser to Earp.

New York Hospitals Making Improvements in Spanish Interpretation Services But More Languages Needed, Report Finds

Although many improvements in the health of Americans have taken place in recent years, substantial differences still exist between racial and ethnic groups with regard to health status, health insurance and access to care. Such compelling evidence of this exists that in 1998 President Clinton put forth an initiative, “Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health.”The goal of this initiative is to eliminate disparities in infant mortality, cancer screening and management, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infections/AIDS and immunizations by the year 2010.

Recently graduated young professionals from communities traditionally underserved or under-represented preparing to launch a career are invited to by apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Evaluation Fellowship Program.  The program will offer the opportunity to explore the field of evaluation and research as a possible career path in public service.

Award: Varies. Recipient will receive a year-long, full-time, paid placement in an organization

The Client Service Executive acts as the orchestrator of GNYHA Services Inc’s global supply chain effort with assigned member organizations in response to the understood customer’s needs.
