Recognizing the importance of mentoring has always been one of AHHEs main messages to our members. So it was natural for us to institute a formal internship program that targeted a group of students not normally eligible to participate in other established programs such as the Summer Enrichment Program. AHHEs internship program identifies qualified undergraduate students to participate in 3-6 month tracks at the worksites of our members.
Our interns are exposed to a wide variety of health management experiences and projects including:
- Clerical and administrative activities supporting member organizations
- Development of healthcare databases
- Participation in community health fairs and other health promotion activities
- Design and analysis of health care data
- Health care marketing and public relations projects
- Opportunity to network with senior Latino healthcare executives
AHHE Interns are referred through one of three ways:
- Full-time students in undergraduate work/study programs established by the career service offices of undergraduate 4 or 2 year colleges
- Referrals by college placement offices.
- Self-referrals by students seeking to obtain practical experience working in a health care environment
Our preceptors have mentored students from a variety of academic institutions including Monroe College and Hunter College in New York. Requirements include:
- Submission of a letter of interest accompanied by a resume
- Fulfilling the human resources and employee health requirements of the sponsoring organization
- A 3-6 month internship with a least a 14 hour per week commitment
- Interviews with the sponsoring preceptor and president of AHHE
Benefits:
- AHHE provides a stipend to cover local commuting expenses and lunch
Internship Cycle:
- Internships are available year-round and provide the flexibility to allow students to factor in their academic schedules. The internship operates during all college semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer)
